{"id":97041,"date":"2021-10-21T14:33:39","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T12:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?page_id=97041"},"modified":"2021-10-21T14:34:35","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T12:34:35","slug":"damnatio-memoriae","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-law\/damnatio-memoriae\/","title":{"rendered":"Damnatio memoriae"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Damnatio memoriae<\/em> (&#8220;condemnation of memory&#8221;) was a punishment in ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-cities\/rome-eternal-city\/\">Rome<\/a> for crimes against the dignity of the Roman people (<em>crimen maiestatis<\/em>). It consisted in erasing the convict from the memory of posterity, forbidding his descendants to bear his name and destroying all his images.<\/p>\n<p>During the empire, the condemnation of memory was applied to senators, and especially to the hated <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-empire\/roman-emperors\/\">emperors<\/a>, whose laws or governments were met with hostility by the people. After the approval of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/republika-rzymska\/urzedy-rzymskie\/senat-rzymski\/\">Senate<\/a> <em>damnatio memoriae<\/em> the statues of the condemned emperor were destroyed, his name was chained from all inscriptions, the images in the paintings were blurred. All his decisions, both concerning individual cases and issued by the convicted person, ceased to apply with retroactive effect. Pizon was accused of illegally leaving the province and treason and brought to trial. He committed <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-law\/suicide-in-world-of-romans\/\">suicide<\/a> and was doomed to obliterate his memory. An inscription with the content of this judgment has survived &#8211; <em>Senatus Consultum de Cn. Pisone patre<\/em> &#8211; a decree issued on December 10, 20 CE. The abbreviation CO was later painted over<em>.<\/em>            <\/div>\n        \n                    <div class=\"chmurka\">\n                Author: DerHexer | Creative-Commons-Lizenz CC-by-sa 4.0            <\/div>\n        \n    <\/div>\n    \n<p>The first emperor to face the punishment of &#8220;oblivion&#8221; was <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/cesarz-kaligula\/\">Caligula<\/a>; in the end, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/klaudiusz\/\">Claudius<\/a> vetoed the senate&#8217;s decision. <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/neron\/\">Nero<\/a> was declared a public enemy by the Senate after his death, but then at the request of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/witeliusz\/\">Vitellius<\/a> he has organized a great state <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/roman-funeral\/\">funeral<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Later, <em>damnatio memoriae<\/em> affected, inter alia, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/domicjan\/\">Domitian<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/geta\/\">Ghetto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/maksymin-trak\/\">Maksymin Trak<\/a> with their son Pupienus and others. Some like <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/karakalla\/\">Caracalla<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/kommodus\/\">Commodus<\/a> and Gordian II were later rehabilitated. Later, almost every emperor after his death was either deified (apotheosis, <em>consecratio<\/em>) or, especially when he did not record well in the senate&#8217;s memory or had no relatives among subsequent emperors, he was condemned to <em>damnatio memoriae<\/em>. In 311 CE after Maximian&#8217;s capture, <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/konstantyn-wielki\/\">Constantine I<\/a> forced him to commit suicide and sentenced him to <em>damnatio memoriae.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forgetfulness&#8221; also affected Roman women, but it was mainly due to the connection between the woman and the convicted man. Scientists have adopted this situation as <em>de facto damnatio memoriae.<\/em> Examples include Agrippina the Elder for her rivalry with Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/tiberius\/\">Tiberius<\/a> or Julia Liwilla for supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/sejanus\/\">Sejanus<\/a>, trying to overthrow Tiberius and poisoning her husband (son of Tiberius) Druzus the Younger.
