{"id":97048,"date":"2021-10-21T14:38:46","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T12:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?page_id=97048"},"modified":"2021-10-21T14:38:46","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T12:38:46","slug":"rubicon","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/rubicon\/","title":{"rendered":"Rubicon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rubicon (<em>Rubic\u014d<\/em>) is a small river in northern Italy; it flows from the Northern Apennines into the Adriatic Sea, into which it flows south of Gatteo; in the time of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ustroj\/republika-rzymska\/\">the Roman Republic<\/a> it was the border between Italy and Cisalpine Gaul.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the growing political power of <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/biografie\/gajusz-juliusz-cezar\/\">Julius Caesar<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/roman-senate\/\">Senate<\/a> set a border on Rubicon, which he could not cross with his legions. It was supposed to protect against a possible coup d&#8217;\u00e9tat, but <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/curiosities\/caesar-queen-of-nicomedes\/\">Caesar<\/a> crossed the river in 49 BCE (presumably on January 10) with his troops, thus starting a <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/wojny\/wojna-domowa-cezara-z-pompejuszem\/\">civil war with Gnaeus Pompey<\/a>, his political competitor.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/suetonius\/\">Suetonius<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/article\/caesar-crossing-the-rubicon\/\">crossing the Rubicon<\/a> Caesar was supposed to say the words <em>alea iacta est<\/em> (traditionally <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/ciekawostka\/kosci-zostaly-rzucone\/\">&#8220;the dice were thrown&#8221;<\/a>, and literally &#8220;the dice was thrown&#8221;), which was supposed to mean making an irreversible decision or a step of great importance.<\/p>\n<p>Another famous saying related to this historic event is <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/artykul\/przekroczenie-rubikonu-cezara\/\">&#8220;to cross the Rubicon&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rubicon (Rubic\u014d) is a small river in northern Italy; it flows from the Northern Apennines into the Adriatic Sea, into which it flows south of Gatteo; in the time of the Roman Republic it was the border between Italy and Cisalpine Gaul.
