{"id":86412,"date":"2020-12-26T21:18:56","date_gmt":"2020-12-26T20:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/?post_type=wpisy_goscinne&#038;p=86412"},"modified":"2020-12-26T21:18:56","modified_gmt":"2020-12-26T20:18:56","slug":"ancient-libraries","status":"publish","type":"wpisy_goscinne","link":"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/guest-posts\/ancient-libraries\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient libraries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to Hecataeus, whose extensive account is quoted by Diodorus Siculus, the magnificent and opulent tomb of the Egyptian <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-kingdom\/roman-kings\/\">king<\/a> Ozymandias contained a sacred library with the inscription: <strong>&#8220;Healing-Place of the Soul&#8221;<\/strong><sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Diodorus Siculus, Bibliotheca historica I:49.3\" data-footid=\"1\">1<\/sup>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In antiquity, the most famous were the Pergamon Library and the Library of Alexandria, where, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/biographies\/ammianus-marcellinus\/\">Ammianus Marcellinus<\/a>, nearly 700,000 volumes were destroyed during a fire<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Ammianus Marcellinus, Res Gestae 22\/16:13\" data-footid=\"2\">2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-society\/education-of-ancient-romans\/\">Education<\/a>, and in particular acquiring knowledge in antiquity, was a priority.
