In <em>Acts of the Apostles<\/em> 13: 9 the narrative of the text goes from the Semitic name Saul (Greek \u03a3\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2, <em>Saulos<\/em>) to the Latin &#8211; Paul (Latin <em>Paulus,<\/em> Greek \u03a0\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2, <em>Paulos<\/em>). Why this sudden name change in the text? <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There are two explanations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The apostle, while in <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-geography\/roman-provinces\/list-of-roman-provinces\/roman-cyprus\/\">Cyprus<\/a>, took this name in honour of the <a href=\"https:\/\/imperiumromanum.pl\/en\/roman-constitution\/roman-republic\/roman-offices\/proconsul\/\">proconsul<\/a> Sergius Paul. Such suggestions can be found in the commentary by Jerome<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"Comment. in ep. ad Philem. 1. H. Dessau (Der Name des Apostels Paulus, Hermes 45 (1910) 347 - 368\" data-footid=\"1\">1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>The apostle at one point gave up the Semitic name because in the Greek-speaking world the wording of this name was similar to an offensive phrase. What word could it be? Perhaps the very name Saul (<em>Saulos<\/em>), which was the epithet for heter and bacchantes<sup class=\"footnote\" data-qtip=\"K. Stebnicka, To\u017csamo\u015b\u0107 diaspory. \u017bydzi w Azji Mniejszej okresu cesarstwa, s. 214\" data-footid=\"2\">2<\/sup>. It could also be <strong>k\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2 \/ \u03a0\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2<\/strong>. The word standard means penis. In its basic meaning, it is a &#8220;stem&#8221; [of cabbage], which, due to its form, accurately describes the male birth (in Aristotle it also means the cervix).
