Ancient burial chamber in catacombs of St. Paul

Ancient burial chamber in the catacombs of St. Paul in Malta. These types of chambers were usually located at a depth of 1.5 to 2 meters, but there were also chambers at a depth of 6 meters.

Due to the stony surface of the island, the chambers were forged in stone and, in order not to waste ground surfaces, the chambers were forged underground. This type of burial practice was practised during Phoenician, Punic and Roman times. As you can see on the reconstruction, individual graves were descended by ladders.
