Beautiful Roman sarcophagus
A beautiful Roman sarcophagus found inside the crypt decorated with frescoes and mosaics.
The object is dated to the 4th century CE. He was discovered in the city of Šid, in northern Serbia. The sarcophagus was made of white marble, mined in the Austrian Alps, probably in the Roman city of Sirmium. The object features a carved male and female figure in military clothing, with mythical motifs – a panther with vines refers to the worship of Dionysus. On the side of the artefact you can also see the head of Medusa.
