Antony and Cleopatra - movie scene
Mark Antony was a Roman commander and politician. He lived in the years 82-30 BCE. He is mainly known for his collaboration with Caesar, his relationship with Cleopatra and the battle of Actium.
Antony was a very loyal co-worker of Caesar. He held the function of the legate and the quaestor. Mark Antony was one of the members of the second triumvirate (along with Augustus and Lepidus) – an agreement concluded in 43 BCE regarding the exercise of power in the state. Antony was to be the lord of the eastern part of the Empire. It can therefore be said that the Roman was politically active and exercised power.
Mark Antony is often also known for his love of turmoil. It is worth mentioning that he married Octavia (sister of Augustus). He is also known for his romance with Cleopatra VII (queen of Egypt). Antony was also, along with the aforementioned Cleopatra, a participant in the battle of Actium, which took place on September 2, 31 BCE. Against them stood Augustus who gained a devastating victory.
Antony died in 30 BCE. He committed suicide. At that news of Cleopatra’s death, he broke through himself with a dagger. Their image – as passionate lovers – is established in culture. It became the motif of many modern books and films.
