Cast of dog from Pompeii
An interesting find from Pompeii buried by volcanic ash. In the photo, is a cast of a dog that was found in Pompeii. The animal tried to break free from the chain in the face of danger. in vain. Dated to the 1st century CE.
The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE spared no one and nothing. Terrified by the clouds of smoke and dust coming out of the volcanic crater, the Roman Vesonius Primus ran away from home and headed towards the sea. He left his dog there, which was tied up in the atrium.
The animal appears to have survived the night by climbing through the buildup of ash. At dawn, however, the taut chain prevented the dog from escaping.
