Head detail Emperor Lucius Verus. The object is dated to the 2nd century CE.
Adopted by the emperor Antoninus Pius, who was to succeed Hadrian in 138 CE. The reign of the Antonine dynasty was characterized by the fact that the rulers decided to adopt future successors. They did so either because there was no male heir or when potential candidates showed good predispositions for the throne.
Verus’ adoptive brother was Marcus Aurelius (earlier name – Marcus Annius), with whom he co-ruled in 161-169 CE. It was the first time in the history of Rome that two emperors ruled a state.
