Fragment of Roman fresco showing Iphigenia

Fragment of a Roman fresco showing Iphigenia, priestess of Artemis, with her assistants. The object dates back to the 1st century CE and was discovered in Lucius Caecilius Iucundus in Pompeii. The artifact is located in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

According to Greek mythology, Iphigenia was to be sacrificed to Artemis by her father as a form of atonement. However, the goddess took pity on the girl and ordered her to sacrifice a doe instead. Iphigenia became a priestess of Artemis.
