The bulge on the medallion served as an ornament on one of the religious items.

Oceanus, according to Greek mythology, was the personification of the so-called the outer sea (in older versions of the river) that surrounded the land and was the source of all waters. Oceanus was one of the Titans who, after defeating them by Zeus, handed over the seas to Poseidon.
