Murmillo-type gladiator helmet used in the TV series “Spartacus.” Characteristic of this class of gladiator was a massive helmet with a large crest and full face shield. This example features additional decorations in the form of seahorses and lions, inspired by motifs known from ancient Roman art.

The Murmillo were heavily armored gladiators. They most often fought with a large rectangular shield and a short gladius sword. Their weaponry was partially based on the equipment of Roman legionaries.

The helmet on display is a modern reconstruction made for the production of the TV series “Spartacus”. It is in the private collection of a historian and collector, a reader of the IMPERIUM ROMANUM website, specializing in ancient Rome.
