Roman fresco with perspective
Roman fresco with cubiculum (bedroom) in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. The fresco is an example of the so-called Pompeian Second style.
This style of Roman painting developed from around 90 BCE up to 15 BCE. Illusionistic paintings with representations of landscapes and architectural motifs were introduced in it. The decoration was to create the impression of larger spaces. On the walls, there are imitations of panel paintings depicting mythological scenes played out against the landscape. Stucco elements are gradually being replaced by their painting counterparts.
