Roman portrait of a young man. The work is dated to the 2nd century CE and was found in Roman Egypt.
The painting belongs to the group of the so-called Fayum portraits. They were realistic portraits made on wood, which were placed next to Egyptian mummies from the time of the Roman rule. This was called panel painting, which was extremely popular in ancient times. About 900 such paintings have survived to our times.
