Skeleton of a Roman soldier. Next to the remains there is an iron sword and a dagger, a belt and a leather sporran (bag). Herculaneum.

The man suddenly died as a result of a pyroclastic flow – a mixture of hot gases reaching around 500°C. Below is an attempt to recreate the last moments of a soldier’s life by scientists.
