Subligaculum – Roman underwear

Subligaculum was underwear, worn e.g. under a toga, which was formed by a linen loincloth. Both men and women wrapped in a belt of material around the waist to cover intimate places. 

This type of clothing was worn especially by gladiators, athletes or actors who often wore nothing but the subligaculum. Most of modern Roman lingerie knowledge comes from frescoes, statues or mosaics.

It is worth noting that the researchers also found an example of the leather variety subligaculum in Londinium (current London).
