The only preserved Roman scutum
In the picture the only preserved scutum – a Roman shield, used by Roman legionaries. It was found flattened, in thirteen pieces, without umbo. The paintings on the shield show: an eagle with a laurel wreath, winged Victoria and a lion.
The find is dated to the middle of the 3rd century CE. It comes from Dura-Europos on the Euphrates.
