Secret History

In my free time, I also read classic works, such as “Secret History”, whose author Procopius of Caesarea described the rule of a very famous imperial couple – Justinian and his unusual wife Theodora, who once ruled the Byzantine state (Eastern Roman Empire). In full agreement with his words found at the very beginning of this work, it can be said that his work does indeed provide some kind of comfort to people who experience governments that are despotic and inhumanly cruel at the same time.

Reading this extraordinary work, one realizes that the periodically bad rule of despotic, fearful and at the same time spoiled degenerates is not something completely isolated and unique in human history.

Nevertheless, we do not fully know the reasons why Procopius of Caesarea decided to paint in such dark colors the image of his “magnificent” master and his beloved wife. It is hard to believe in all the stories he quotes uncritically. However, one must remember, according to an old folk saying “there is no smoke without fire”.
