New Roman frescoes were discovered in Pompeii

Archaeologists made an extraordinary discovery in Pompeii – beautiful frescoes depicting rituals related to Dionysian mysteries were uncovered. This is one of the best-preserved paintings presenting such events.

Frescoes show Dionysus surrounded by nymphs and satires, as well as initiation scenes in which women participate, perhaps priestesses or people newly admitted to worship. Dionysian mysteries were mysterious rituals during which the followers underwent symbolic purification, experienced ecstasy, and believed in the possibility of achieving divine blessing.

The find comes from the luxury villa Casa del Tiaso in Pompeii and may indicate that its owners belonged to the elite, which had access to these closed, mystical ceremonies. The paintings’ detail, intense colours, and symbolism make it one of the most fascinating discoveries in Pompeii in recent years.

Scientists date the painting to the 30s or 40s of 1st century CE.
