Legionary dressed in sagum
Among the numerous elements of the Roman legionary’s equipment, the sagum (or sagulum) held a special place. It was a heavy woollen coat that protected against cold, rain and wind during marching and fighting. Sagum was worn during military campaigns in frosty climates – Gaul, Germania or Britain. The coat was usually fastened with a fibula (pin) on the shoulder.
Sagum was a rectangular piece of cloth and was the typical clothing of the Gauls, which was adopted by the Roman army.
