Roman camp (castrum Romanum) was characterized by excellent workmanship. It was built of wood, and the work force was legionnaires. It should be noted that the Romans were characterized by excellent building skills.
The Roman camp created for military purposes was not built by professional engineers and builders. It was created by ordinary soldiers who built a camp in every place, every day. According to ancient records, the average time for erecting a Roman camp was 4 to 5 hours.
Under favorable conditions, however, the camp could be erected even in 3 hours. It seems certain that the legionnaires underwent special training aimed at developing skills in the construction of such a camp. If necessary, they had to be able to set up a camp quickly and efficiently. Evidence of the existence of training camps are the remains of such facilities in western Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia).
