Roman walls in Cologne

Cologne was founded in the 1st century CE through the Romans, and they can be traced to this day. An example of this is the remains of the defensive walls located within today’s city centre.
Fragments of fortifications can be found in the underground car park next to the cathedral, on the streets, courtyards and in the lower parts of modern residential buildings, and even the Cologne City Museum (Kölnisches Stadtmuseum).
The photo shows the best-preserved tower with visible decorations. The walls originally included 19 towers and 9 gates.
