Balkerne Gate ruins in Colchester

Balkerne Gate ruins in Colchester (south-east England) at night, dated to the first century CE. It is the largest and best preserved Roman gate that has survived to our times.

Romans built a gate in 49 CE in the founded Colchester. In the year 60 CE the city was completely destroyed by the uprising of Boudica. After this rebellion, the city was surrounded by a stone wall and described gate became part of the western wall – this way led road to Londinium.
