House of Vettii in Pompeii is open to public

In Pompeii, after 20 years of renovation work, the famous House of the Vettii is open to the public again.

The building was excavated at the end of the 19th century. It probably belonged to two freedmen with the same name. According to scientists, the men got rich in the wine trade, and the rich interior of the house (paintings and sculptures) proves that they made a lot of wealth.

The renovation project included a lot of work. Researchers, among others, undertook to better protect the preserved frescoes and give them a shine. In the peristyle, in turn, copies of the original sculptures (including the statue of Priapus) were placed, which are in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Plant species that grew in this place two thousand years ago were also planted.
