Porta Maggiore in Rome was closed

After several stones fell off Porta Maggiore in Rome on June 14, the authorities decided to temporarily close the pedestrian crossing. The first expert assessment suggests that the building is in good condition.

Porta Maggiore is an ancient gate through which the mighty walls of Aurelian were once crossed. Originally, the gate connected two aqueducts; however, with the construction of defensive fortifications during the reign of Emperor Aurelian (270-275 CE), the gate was incorporated into the walls.
