The Vespasian Forum is also called Forum Pacis, meaning “square of peace”. It owes this name to the Temple of Peace (Templum Pacis) situated in the centre of the square. Forum Pacis belongs to the so-called imperial forums. This square was erected by Emperor Vespasian in the years 71 – 75 CE. It was a thanksgiving for the victory in the Jewish uprising of 66-73 CE.
Originally, the entire complex of Vespasian was not referred to as the market square (forum), but as the temple complex (templum).
