Cato the Elder, known as Censor

Cato the Elder fought against all Greek influence as a supporter of the traditional virtues of Roman and republican rule. He was a supporter of strict and old Roman traditions, the origin of which dates back to the Samnites.

Once upon a time, Cato the Elder – in his office of censor and overseeing the moral life of the Romans – criticized Senator Manilius for kissing his wife in front of his daughter during the day. Kato stated that he personally never allowed himself to get close to his wife. The only exception was a kiss in a thunderstorm. He added that he was pleased with the roar of the lightning then.
