Socks and sandals
In 2010, researchers discovered 14 military graves in North Yorkshire (Britain), in which next to the bodies of the buried Romans were the remains of sandals, including preserved fibers among rust from nails from sandals. This proves that the ancient Romans could wear socks along with sandals , and thus extravagant fashion appeared much earlier than we think.
Of course, this style of clothing was not shocking at the time. Autumn in Britain can be really cold and unpleasant, and the Romans were used to walking in sandals looking for all the ways not to feel cold. Socks were certainly a good idea.
The discovery was described in the suburbs. Apart from the graves, there were remains of a water mill, clothes, food and ceramics. The discovery happened accidentally during construction works on the A1 – between Dishforth and Leeming.
