Extremely interesting mosaic showing evil eye
Extremely interesting Roman mosaic showing how great fears ancient people had about the so-called the “evil eye” that was supposed to cause suffering or unhappiness.
The mosaic shows the Eye, pierced by a trident and a sword, pecked by a raven, barked by a dog and attacked by a centipede, scorpion, cat and snake. A dwarf with a giant phallus is crossing sticks. The Greek wording “KAI SU” means “You too”.
The Roman mosaic comes from the so-called House of the Evil Eye in Antioch. Currently, the object is located in Hatay Arkeoloji Müzesi, Antioch (southern Turkey).
