Monument to Emperor Antoninus Pius near Wrocław

In the town of Magnice (commune of Kobierzyce) in the suburbs of Wroclaw, a new street has been named after a Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.

A monument to his adoptive father and predecessor on the imperial throne, Antoninus Pius, has also been erected on this street. The monument is a replica of a denarius of this emperor, enlarged to one meter in diameter, discovered on that spot during archaeological research conducted there a few years ago. These excavations revealed the existence of a very large Przeworsk Culture settlement in the 2nd century CE. The coin-shaped monument is placed on a black marble pedestal imported from Scandinavia, the place of origin of the settlement’s inhabitants. Several billboards next to the monument tell the story of the archaeological research and of the Roman Antonine dynasty, to which both Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius belonged
