Remains of Vindolanda – Roman camp in Britain

A wonderful picture was taken by The Vindolanda Trust and shows the Vindolanda Roman military camp in northern Britain. This place is a real treasury of information about the army and the Roman community.

The Vindolanda camp was founded in the 1st century CE, and the area under Roman control was until the end of the 4th century CE.

Scientists managed to learn the history of the camp in great detail. Infantry and cavalry belonging to the auxiliary units were stationed in Vindoland (including the Batavian or Tungri cohort).

West of the fort was formed vicus – a small centre, and in the south, there were large hot springs.
