Roman mosaic with parrot

Roman mosaic with a parrot, dating from the 2nd century BCE; currently in the collection of the Pergamon Museum (Berlin, Germany).

In ancient Rome, parrots were considered extremely exotic and luxurious pets. They were imported primarily from Africa, India, and other distant regions, making them a symbol of wealth and high social status.
