Roman road in Marsala

In the archaeological park of Lilybaeum (Marsala, western Sicily) there are remains of a Roman road that, as cardo, crossed the city from north to south.
The road was part of the main square of the ancient city (plateia). No traces of cart wheels have survived, which proves that the road was used mainly by pedestrians.
Researchers found a Latin inscription on a piece of stone that mentions an unknown official (praetor designatus) who had the road paved.
