Roman workers found an ancient bathhouse and tombs

Roman baths and tombs were discovered in Rome in the suburbs of the city – Casal Bernocchi. Construction works were carried out for the future Orthodox church.

At the time of the discovery, work was stopped and excavations began. Thermal baths and tombs, which date between the 1st and 4th centuries CE, have been brought to light. There were black and white mosaics in the thermal baths and an advanced water and heating system.

A total of ten bodies were found in the tombs, which were buried in various Roman periods. In the earliest tombs, the bodies were burnt and the ashes were placed in urns; in later years, the body was simply buried in accordance with the Catholic rite. In the graves, scientists found bracelets, rings, coins and jars that were buried with the dead. The graves found suggest that the deceased were people from the lower classes.
