“Tomb of athletes” was found near Rome

Scientists have found a unique find near Rome. During the excavation works carried out to extract the remains of the aqueduct, the burial site was brought to daylight, in which, apart from the skeletons, there were many tools for body care.

Archaeologists immediately dubbed this place: “Tomb of athletes”. In addition to the remains of four bodies, the chamber contained strigil, tools used in ancient times to remove old and dirty epidermis; used especially by athletes who cleansed the body after strenuous exercise. In addition, numerous, decorated ceramics, a copper coin showing Minerva armed with a helmet, and plates with food remains were found in the burial chamber: meat of rabbits, chickens and goats.

Scientists say it is lucky that the place is completely intact; it was only 2 meters below the ground level. The place is dated to the 4th century BCE.
