Second phase of Colosseum renovation has come to end

Thanks to the completed works in Colosseum, tourists have the opportunity to visit the underground corridors of the building. Thus, the second of the three renovation phases of this enormous building has ended.

It is worth noting that the Colosseum maintenance project was supported by a private investor, an Italian company producing luxury leather shoes and accessories, “Tod’s”, with a €25 million support. The company has been actively supporting Rome in rebuilding the majestic building since 2011.

The comprehensive renovation of the Colosseum began in 2013, when the north and south façades were cleaned and maintained for three years, and the metal gates at ground level were replaced.

Phase two, which has just ended, was to secure the underground rooms and corridors (hypogea) that were once under the arena. There were cells, rooms for servants, gladiators and complicated machines that allowed to take elements of the scenery, wild animals and people into the arena.

The third phase involves the renovation of the second level of the building, the relocation of the Colosseum service center outside the building, and the installation of technical amenities.

It is worth mentioning that about a month ago a company was selected to undertake the installation of the new arena at the Colosseum. It is supposed to allow for the organization of events in the Amphitheatre, and with the help of complex systems, it will allow showing the underground structures of the ancient structure.
