Caligula and cheering

Emperor Gaius, known as Caligula

Caligula was famous – according to ancient sources – for his unstable behavior. I.e. when during the games the crowd supported another team than the Emperor Caligula, he was supposed to say: “Would that the Roman people had but one neck”.

Another time, when the crowd demanded to kill brigand Tetrinius, the emperor would say that those who asked for him were Tetriniuses also. The ruler frequently accused the senators of calling them clients of Sejanus – the prefect of the Praetorian Guard during the reign of the emperor Tiberius.
