Model of Porta Nigra (“Black Gate”) and Roman fortifications with a photo of the preserved gate. The monument is located in Trier (Roman Augusta Trevorum) in West Germany.
It is estimated that the gate was built in the 2nd century CE. It was not fully completed, but it served as the main entrance gate on the north side.
After the fall of Rome, the gate was gradually dismantled from the building material, and with time it became a sacred place.
