Remains of Roman amphitheater in Serbia
Remains of a Roman amphitheatre in the ancient city of Viminacium, near Kostolac, Serbia. The object has been partially reconstructed based on the discoveries of archaeologists. Scientists rebuilt the wooden stands in the north-eastern part of the building and the eastern gate.
Gladiator fights and fights with wild animals took place in the amphitheatre. As many as 7,000 people could sit in the audience. The facility was located right next to the VII Claudia legion camp.
The first amphitheatre was built of wood in the 2nd century CE so that a large stone structure would be built by the 3rd century. The arena was 55 by 45 meters. With time, the building was forgotten and the building material was taken away.
Researchers in the amphitheatre found numerous artefacts: remains of weapons, statues, tools, ceramics, jewellery or even the remains of animals belonging to a camel or a bear.
