Roman milestones were discovered in northern Italy

In Brescia (northern Italy), archaeological excavations were carried out prior to the commencement of sewage works under Via Milano. Researchers managed to find three Roman milestones from the late Empire period.

The two stones are about 2 meters high; one 2.5 meters. All three milestones have imperial inscriptions, typical of the 3rd-4th centuries CE. One of the stones shows the number II, which indicates that the stone was located two Roman miles (approx. 3 km) from the centre of ancient Rome.

Along with the milestones, an undamaged altar with an inscription was discovered. It is not known why all the objects were located next to each other, and far from Rome. Researchers suspect that the stone objects could have been used as a construction material, but were forgotten in the ditch.
