Villa of Domitia was opened on island of Giannutri

The remains of one of the most prestigious seaside villas from Roman times were reopened to the public in 2015. The monument is located on an uninhabited island – Giannutri – near the Tuscan coast and has been inaccessible to the public for over 15 years.

The estate, popularly known as “Villa Domitia”, was an imperial complex that was built under extremely unfavourable conditions. There is no water source on the island, and all construction materials had to be delivered on ships. Despite the difficulties, the Romans managed to build a magnificent villa using marble, decorated with mosaics and frescoes. Visiting the complex is possible from July 2.
