Reconstruction of the Sanctuary of Fortune in Praeneste
Reconstruction of the Sanctuary of Fortune in Praeneste

Reconstruction of the temple of Fortuna Primigenia (present-day Palestrina, about 40 km east of Rome) and how this once powerful complex looks today.

The sanctuary was dedicated to the Roman goddess of happiness, Fortune. The structure was built at the turn of the second and 1st century BCE and was modelled on Hellenistic models from Pergamon or Rhodes.

The building consisted of two levels and numerous terraces. The impressive sanctuary was used until the 4th century CE. The city later formed on its ruins, and the stone from the building was used for other construction activities. Currently, thanks to the work of archaeologists, it has been possible to distinguish an ancient structure that is still impressive.
