Request from Augustus veteran
This post is also available in: Polish (polski)
There is a story saying that one day, to the Emperor Augustus, came his former soldier who took part in the battle of Actium (31 BCE). The veteran asked August to defend him in court.
Augustus replied that he would appoint an appropriate lawyer to look after his case. The veteran said: “At Actium when you were in danger, I did not seek another to fight for me; I fought for you myself”. Those words embarrassed the Emperor so much that he agreed to personally defend the legionary in court. Of course, he managed to win the case.
