Well-preserved Roman gate in Lugo

A well-preserved Roman gate in Lugo (Spain). This city is the only centre in the world that is surrounded by completely intact Roman walls from the 3rd century CE.

The Romans surrounded the city with defensive walls about 2 thousand meters long, 4,2 m thick and 8 to 12 m high. They had 10 gates and gates and 71 defensive towers (60 round and 11 quadrangular). The city in Roman times was called Lucus Augusti (founded in honor of Octavian Augustus in 13 BCE) and was in the province of Hispania Tarraconensis (northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula).

The preserved Roman walls are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
