A mosaic floor in a wealthy merchant's villa

Floor mosaic in villa of rich merchant

Amazing floor mosaic in the atrium of the villa of the wealthy merchant Aulus Umbricius Scaurus in Pompeii. The man traded the famous fish sauce – garum.

Black and white tiles surround irregularly trimmed, coloured pieces of marble and limestone. The mosaic is arranged in the style of lithostroton. The object dates to the 1st century CE.
