Roman tunnels

Roman tunnels, or vinae, were a form of siege machines. Similar to the skeleton of a building, but with wheels. The soldiers hidden inside could safely approach the enemy’s walls. The walls and roof were covered with fresh animal skins so that the tunnel would not be burned by the lit arrows of the defenders.
