Roman fresco in Herculaneum even better studied

Thanks to a new portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) called ‘Elio’, scientist Eleonora Del Federico has been able to take a closer look at the Roman painting of Herculaneum.

The fresco is located in the atrium of the Mosaic House in Herculaneum. Thanks to the instrument, you can see how sophisticated the technique was used to create the image and how much detail the author focused on. X-ray fluorescence allows you to look at the painting through any damage and look at the elementary composition of the object and the way the layers are distributed.
