The letter Y was not originally in Romans. Y was added to the Latin alphabet around the 1st century BCE to render Greek words better.
This letter, to distinguish it from the Latin “I”, was called “I Greek”. It is still called like that in French, from where it came to us as “igrek” after Polish.
