Marble statue of the goddess Isis. The object was discovered in Pompeii. The artifact is in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
Isis was the Egyptian goddess of fertility, and the protector of families. One of the incarnations of the Great Mother; later identified with the Greek Demeter. Her sacred animal was the cow. The temples dedicated to the goddess were given two different names: either the Serapeion (from the name of her partner Serapis) or the Isideion (from her own name).
