Roman helmet from the 2nd century CE
Roman helmet from 2nd century CE

A well-preserved Roman helmet from the 2nd century CE. The object was found in a field in Sivac, in northern Serbia. Currently, it is in a museum in Sombor.

Scientists suspect that the helmet belonged to a soldier from the driving troops during a military expedition against the Iazyges in Pannonia in 167-171 and 177-178 CE. Helmet type Niederbieber.

The helmet has the inscription: C*III*IVL*M*I*EVC, which probably means: C(ohors) tertia IVL(iana) M(anipulus) primus LVC(ii) , i.e. the cavalryman belonged to First Maniple of Centurion Lucius in the Third Cohort of Iuliana.
